Today´s post is dedicated to Mark Twain – the famous and remarkable American writer.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Twain grew up in Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion’s newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, which became very popular and brought nationwide attention. He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain was born during a visit by Halley’s Comet, and he predicted that he would “go out with it” as well. He died the day following the comet’s subsequent return. William Faulkner called Twain “the father of American literature”.
The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.
We never become really and genuinely our entire and honest selves until we are dead — and not then until we have been dead years and years. People ought to start dead and then they would be honest so much earlier.
I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can’t find anybody who can tell me what they want.
Do something every day that you don’t want to do. This is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.
